About Sunset Beach

The island of Sunset Beach sits at the southeast tip of North Carolina, just above the state border with South Carolina.  It is primarily a 2nd home/seasonal rental community, with about 1300 homes on the island. The island is part of the Town of Sunset Beach, with most of the full-time residents living in neighborhoods on the mainland.
Our community has seen steady growth over the years, as its beautiful beach strand and mild climate have become more widely known.  Two recent major infrastructure projects have been completed in Sunset Beach-a new bridge from the mainland to the island, and a community sewer system through the entire town that replaced most septic systems that had been in place.
Our community comes to life in the summer season as we welcome visitors from around the world to our beach.  Weekly outdoor concerts take place in town on the mainland, there’s an area festival of one theme or another every weekend, and there is our beach!  We believe we’re spoiled with a wide and inviting beach strand that is as fine as any you might find elsewhere.  If you haven’t spent a week on our beach, you need to come enjoy it this year!

Though our community has grown over the last decade, you’ll find the area well-managed by zoning.  Our beach community has height restrictions for buildings so that we don’t have high rise buildings as you might find in other beach areas along the coast.  Our town is incorporated, with its own elected council and experienced staff that work daily to balance the growth demands with the communities’ vision.
